Insecurity

Due to the high levels of kidnapping on farms, many small farmers were forced to change their trade entirely.

Import Reliance

Nigeria does not grow enough food or has enough industries in the food sector to feed itself. It heavily relies on imports

The devaluation of the Naira significantly reduced our purchasing power as an import-dependent country.

High petrol costs as an energy source for transportation and manufacturing inflated food prices significantly.

We can make a difference together

In August 2024, we brainstormed and decided to make an attempt at a solution to hunger in the country instead of waiting for someone else to do it as the country suffers.

The big question

How can we improve food security in Nigeria?

Food is national security. Food is economy. It is employment, energy, history. Food is everything. ~ José Andrés

Our Options

  1. Feed the people as a charity
  • Its expensive to feed the 120 million people facing food insecurity
  • It does not solve the root problem and is almost impossible to achieve no matter how generous we try to be
  • it is neither empowering nor sustainable

2. Teach people how to grow their food at home at almost no cost

  • teach households how to grow their food at home
  • create a leadership structure in every neighbourhood so that they can manage this new intitiative well and solve their problems by themselves
  • Plant 300 fruits and vegetable crops along the streets of the community
  • engage the community members in dialogue and sensitization on self reliance
  • Establish a community resource bank

We chose the second option. Food production should no longer be left at the hands of farmers only. It must become a personal responsibility. Every Nigerian should learn to grow food in their home

Hence, Gaata was born

We want to empower neighborhoods to be self reliant

Mission

Gaata will be an intermediary NGO dedicated to developing and implementing effective frameworks that will enable communities to eradicate hunger in their homes

we plan to be a non-profit organisation that seeks to be a bridge that gather resources from people to implement effective methodologies of resolving hunger across nigerian communities

we aim to make nigerians realise that as a collective, we have the resources and ability to solve our most immediate problems without waiting for politicians or others to come to our aid.

How it will work

Get 300 – 500 people to commit to a 1 year donation Plan

We will need to raise N1m – N2m monthly to make this effort a reality. Pledge any amount of money you can afford to be give monthly for 1 year

Get an NGO to implement the project (Gaataa)

We formed Gaataa solely for the purpose of being an intermediary NGO between those that want to help stop hunger in the country and the most needy

Select the Neighbourhood For Implementation

One neighborhood will be selected (once we reach our target commitment goal) as the place of implementation and testing of this framework as a solution to hunger

Be the bridge between the Donors and the Beneficiaries

How we will utilise the funds

organise weekly sensitization on topics and discussions that will open their minds and help them be more self reliant
